Missy was one of the dogs we brought back from New Orleans on our second trip. Thanks to her uncaring owners who didn't find it necessary to treat her for her heartworms (they knew she was heartworm+) she came to us with an advanced case of heartworms which would be difficult to treat. We chose to go ahead and try to treat them and we sadly lost the bet....Missy passed away last night (1-13-06) from congestive heart failure brought on by heartworm treatment. Missy was the most loving gentle old dog that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She loved my children and greeted them with tons of kisses. She loved to sleep in the bed, roll on the couch, chase the cats, and get lots of lovins'. She spent her entire life (10 years) with hatred and anger yet she wasn't a mean dog...she forgave all the bad that was done to her. For the 3 months she was here with us she only knew love and affection....never went without food...and was well cared for. Now she is running free in a field of green grass chasing cats to her hearts content and I pray that she sees fit to keep a watch over my children until they meet her again. This could have all been prevented if her owners would have cared enough to take proper care of her during her lifetime....instead they ignored the problem and now she is gone.

Missy weighed a whopping 25 pounds when I brought her back to VA....now she is up to 50 pounds. ~You can see the first pictures of her when I met her at HumaneLA in the photo gallery for Camp Katrina~ She has been spayed and is now being treated for her heartworms (she was symptomatic..including coughing and accelerated heartrate).
There are many stories floating around about Missy and if she is actually an owner surrender or not. I have spoken to the gentleman I believe was her first owner (his brother is the one who left her behind in NOLA to die) and he confirmed the story told below in the email I got from DRAR about what happened to Missy during her 41 days trapped with no food and only rancid floodwater to drink. The family also knew she was heartworm+ but didn't get her treatment. Below are emails I have received on her from the group at Winn Dixie who origionally had her before she was transfered to HumaneLA and from one of the ladies who rescued her from hell:

Hello,
My name is Rita and I live in Max Meadows, VA.  I volunteered with Humane LA and DRAR from September to mid-October.  I periodically check your website, usually looking for happy news, but today I happened upon Missy's story.  I almost fell out of my chair when I read her story, because I was one of three rescuers who saved her.  On my last night at the Winn Dixie (Oct 13th), we got a call that she was tied up in an apartment, and the owner's girlfriend was afraid of her.  The owner's girlfriend called the police (I believe it was several days after she left the house for the last time), and the police called us.  When we got to the apartment, we found poor Missy tied to the inside of the bathroom door, standing on top of a wire kennel.  There was no food or water, not even rancid flood water.  The kennel took up most of the floor space in the bathroom, but even if there was floor space for her, she would have hung herself from her short leash.  So, Missy spent 43 days standing on a wire kennel.  She was emaciated when we found her, and her nails had started to curl under.  She was barking, but her eyes showed only fear, hurt, and confusion.  She ate from our hands.  We picked her up and carried her back to the car.  I cried because I knew I was leaving the next morning.  I didn't have the money to stay any longer, and Missy was likely to be the last pet I could rescue from this horrible situation.

Hi-
I was the person who initially took in Missy. She IS an owner surrender. She was found on top of a kennel tied to a post- she belonged to a guy who left the dog and his girlfriend. The girlfriend went to get her things from the house and she was scared of the dog, so she left her there without food or water!! Then she (and the boyfriend) expected the dog to be dead... she returned in a week to get more stuff... dog was alive and someone called us (DRAR from Winn-Dixie) to come and get the dog. Find her a good home- she was a sweet skin and bones lady:)
